Apex Predator has two qualified skippers, one highly skilled Dive Master and all crew are Level Three Medics with O² Management on board to supervise all the dives.

Boat:”Apex Predator” a 13 meter custom built catamaran.

Passengers Max: 40 + 5 crew.

Cage: 8 Divers per rotation. Cage time varies between 20 good shark passes and/or 20 minutes. Divers rotate and at the discretion of the skipper may enter the cage for a 2nd or 3rd time.

The shark cage diving boat trip starts between 6h00 and 12h00 in the morning from Kleinbaai harbor, depending on the tides and the weather. A trip normally takes between 4-5hours, depending on the shark activity. PLEASE NOTE: Times may vary due to the tides and expected sea conditions.

After a continental breakfast (no greasy foods which will result in possible sea-sickness), payments can be made in either cash or VISA/MASTERCARD and indemnities signed.

The skipper will give a full safety briefing on land during which you will be informed of the route, the boat, and the possible marine wildlife you might encounter during the trip.

After a 2 minute walk to the harbour, you will board the custom-built vessel, Apex Predator
They will then launch to Dyer Island, Joubert’s Dam or anchor spot chosen at the discretion of the skipper based on current sightings and weather conditions.

The round boat trip to and from the harbour normally takes 3 to 4 hours, depending on the shark activity.

After dropping anchor, they begin attracting Great Whites with a specially – formulated ‘Chum’ mixture, made from completely legal ingredients, which has taken Brian McFarlane years to perfect and is a highly-guarded trade secret. They are fortunate to encounter great white sharks, copper sharks (bronze whalers) and even stingrays on their trips. However, since the orca predations on white sharks, no operator can predict Great White Shark behaviour and are currently mainly experiencing copper shark sightings with occasional great white shark sightings.

MANDATE AGAINST THE USE OF SHARK PRODUCTS – Great White Shark Tours do not at any stage feed the sharks nor use any part of a shark product in their ‘secret chum mixture’ and have signed a mandate to this effect.

Once the Great White Sharks arrive, you will have the opportunity to photograph these apex predators in their natural environment searching for the food source on the surface, next to the boat. This is when you enter the shark cage!

We recommend that you book well in advance and allow at least 2 days for diving in case of adverse weather conditions. Passengers are exposed to the open sea while travelling to and from the 2 islands, Dyer Island & Geyser Rock. At the islands, the boat is anchored off the lee sides and protected bays.

Tourists are exposed to the open sea and therefore waterproof jackets are provided for protection against the elements while travelling to and from the anchoring spot. Vinyl side curtains give additional protection from the wind and sea spray. Should that spot be Shark Alley, the boat is anchored off the lee sides and protected bays.

Great White Shark Tours, a shark cage diving operation in Gansbaai, was founded more than 20 years ago by Brian McFarlane, a professional diver and skipper, who was involved with the sea, diamond diving, fishing and great white sharks for most of his life. Apex Predator is a custom-built vessel awarded the coveted Blue Flag Status, implying a boat with all the modern amenities to give guests a comfortable, safe experience suitable for the sea conditions in the area where the company has been legally assigned to do shark cage diving.

Imparting passion and knowledge to the staff and crew, Brian has installed respect for the marine wildlife daily encountered on trips giving guests a truly memorable shark diving experience.

Gansbaai Great White Shark Sightings March 2020

Great White Shark Sightings Update

So far into March, Gansbaai shark boat operators have seen and cage dived with some amazing Great White Sharks. Some days produced no less than 4 great white sharks with the largest being 4.5 meters.

“Great experience! We were so lucky and saw 4 great whites. What a day. Thanks to all the staff from booking to the experience on the boat. The staff we were booking with was so kind and did a lot to help us out! The experience on the boat was much more than we could ask for. I’m so happy.” – Patrick Simonsin, 16 March 2020.

Great White Shark Diving, Gansbaai

What happens when we don’t see Great White Sharks?

On most of these days, we cage dive and view a second large shark species that frequent Gansbaai waters, the Copper Shark. These sharks grow up to 3.5 meters and cage diving with them is a thrilling experience, as our client reviews can testify to.

Great white shark sightings can never be guaranteed, even though sightings have improved from that of 2019. Get in touch with us via the website Live Chat or WhatsApp to check recent sightings.

Gansbaai Great White Shark Sightings December 2019

Gansbaai operators have had some amazing great white shark sightings during recent months, despite the great white sharks not being seen in Cape Town anymore. Book your shark trip in Gansbaai here.

Gansbaai is a 2 ½ hour drive from the Cape Town city centre and is known as the Mecca or Capital of the Great White Shark.

Great white shark numbers have decreased and sightings are lower than usual however the Gansbaai boats continues to have great white shark sightings between the 7 boats in the Gansbaai shark cage diving and viewing fleet. Pre-storm, the latest great white sightings include several days during December, with the most recent great white sighting on 18 December.

A typical day shark diving in Gansbaai will have you cage diving with sharks – great whites or copper sharks. As the great whites numbers decreased, the Copper shark sightings have increased and cage diving now offers a chance to see these amazing sharks, that grow up to 3.5 meters, from the boat and cage. Whilst most days we cage dive with copper sharks, there is every chance that the next shark to pass by the cage is a great white shark, as many of our clients have experienced.

Great white shark numbers are thought be be dwindeling, not only due to Orca predation but also over-fishing of South Africa’s fish stocks. You can show your support against over-fishing in South Africa by signing a petition like this one  https://www.change.org/p/south-african-government-stop-chin… .
