Shark Diving in Gansbaai

Shark Cage Diving Trip Summary

Your day starts early morning in Kleinbaai harbour, just outside the town of Gansbaai. A light breakfast and good coffee await you on arrival. During breakfast, the indemnity forms are signed, and a dive briefing given by our qualified crew. All this takes about 30 minutes to an hour. After a short walk down the road, you will board the boat and set off for adventure.

The boat ride takes about 20 minutes. Remember to take seasickness tablets before the tour if you are prone to motion sickness. After anchoring the boat, the crew starts chumming for sharks and hand out dive gear.

Once the sharks arrive, everybody gets to take turns to go in the cage. Most cages take between 5 and 8 persons at a time. Don’t worry if you don’t want to go into the cage. The boat-based viewing is impressive, and you will have plenty of photo opportunities. Kids from age 10 can join in the cage diving fun.

A typical tour lasts between 2 and 4 hours at sea, depending on your operator, the weather, and shark activity. Back on land, a light lunch and clean showers are ready for you to enjoy. During lunch, you get to see the video that the onboard media crew filmed. Your trip video is available for purchase, but you are welcome to bring your camera or rent a GoPro from us.

Remember to look out for whales on your way back home. Gansbaai is, after all, one of the best land-based whale watching spots in the world.

The coastline offers fantastic walking trails with spectacular whale watching from the land between August and October. Boats also take visitors to see the whales, penguins, dolphins, seabirds, seals, and more. Visit Dangerpoint Lighthouse, the penguin sanctuary, beautiful beaches, or explore our harbour in town with the well-known fishing factory that many call the heartbeat of Gansbaai. What’s happening with the shark cage diving in Gansbaai during level 1 lockdown?

Operators are waiting in anticipation for great white shark sightings to pick up after starting operations again in mid-September. If the great white sharks don’t show up, you can almost be sure to cage dive with many copper sharks. Days with no sharks at all are rare. These sharks are fiesty and grow up to 3.5 meters. When the boats stopped operating due to Covid-19 during March, the latest sightings included up to 4 great white sharks per day.

While our international tourism market recovers, shark boats mostly go out on weekends and public holidays. Mid-week tours are available on request and subject to meeting minimum passenger requirements. Do contact our reservations agents for available dates. You can reach us on WhatsApp right now for the latest sightings and updates. Did you know that you can also buy a one-year valid voucher for this activity?
